Celtic fantasy – Speculative fiction – Experimental fiction

Bryn Glas Books is based in West Wales where we publish a small quantity of quality fiction through our Pantolwen Press imprint. The Seaborne and The Priest’s Wife by A G Rivett are the first books of the Isle Fincara Trilogy.  These are works of speculative fiction: a Celtic fantasy in which a modern man finds himself on a medieval island a thousand years ago. In The Seaborne, a time-traveled engineer finds he must learn old skills that are new to him and come to terms with old ways of looking at the world that may contain some wisdom. In The Priest’s Wife, the narrative takes a new direction. In following the story of an island woman, it draws strongly on historical tensions between the Celtic and mainstream churches, and thereby explores contrasting attitudes towards the natural world and concerning the right use of power an authority. By contrast, Vu is a work of experimental fiction in which a Western storyteller narrates to the Princess Scheherazade, presenting a collage of vividly-painted lyric pictures: myriad details culled from 2000 years of culture across the globe.  What these very different works have in common is historical perspective, a willingness to challenge the mainstream, an appreciation of timeless values, and a willingness to question – what is truth?
